Development of the Academic Department

Department and Graduate Institute Evolution

The department was established in 2000 and has become one of the fastest-growing public affairs-related departments in southern Taiwan. Over the years, it has organized numerous significant national academic events, including the 2004 "Taiwan Political Science Association Annual Conference and Academic Symposium," the 2007 "Chinese Political Science Association Annual Conference and Academic Symposium," the 2008 "International Symposium on Political Economy and Computer Simulation Approaches," and the 2017 "Annual Conference of the Joint Association of Public Administration and Public Affairs Programs in Taiwan and International Academic Symposium."

Our department pioneered internship courses nationwide, receiving recognition from the Ministry of Education's 2004 evaluation committee, commissioned by the Taiwan Assessment and Evaluation Association. In 2007, the department successfully passed the university department evaluation, becoming one of the first public affairs departments to receive this accreditation. Moreover, in both 2016 and 2021, the department achieved accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Building on this solid foundation, the department established a graduate institute in 2007 and launched a Master's Program for Professionals in 2015.

Distinctive Features of the Department

The department aims to cultivate professionals in political science with a supplementary focus on law, emphasizing a combination of politics and legal studies. Using "government" as the shared core between political science and law, the department develops its research and teaching. The political science field focuses on public policy and administration, while the legal field emphasizes public law (constitutional and administrative law), while also maintaining core courses in traditional civil, commercial, and criminal law.

With an interdisciplinary academic approach and broad cross-disciplinary training, the department strives to achieve the educational goals of "Innovative Ideas, Global Vision, Local Concern, and a Balance of Theory and Practice." In response to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the department seeks to cultivate policy managers for the public, private, and nonprofit sectors who are adept in global trends and possess legal expertise.
